“20000 Leagues Under the Sea” Part2 Ch21

Question 1: what feelings are evoked in you with the knowledge that Captain Nemo’s hatred and mission of vengeance stemmed from having lost his country and family to some oppressor?  It it easier to feel sympathy for Captain Nemo when you read the following passage?

“On the end wall beneath his heroes, I saw the portrait of a woman still young, and two little children.  Captain Nemo looked at them for some moments, stretched his arms towards them, and kneeling down burst into deep sobs.”

Question 2: In light of question 1 above, can we judge men by their actions alone, or do we need to consider their motives and the intents of their hearts?
