What is an aneurism?  What medical knowledge of the heart and circulatory system existed in 1867?

Answer 2: An aneurism according to Webster’s New Explorer Dictionary (copyright 2005, published by Federal Street Press, Springfield, MA) is:

an abnormal blood-filled bulge of a blood vessel

Question 3: What is the weather beam of a ship?

Answer 3: According to “Chamber’s Encyclopedia, A Dictionary of Universal Knowledge New Edition Vol 1. A to Beaufort” by William and Robert Chambers, published by J.B. Lippincott Company, Philadelphia, 1896:

‘On the weather beam’ is that side of the ship which receives or is toward the wind.
